The final session of the workshop will be an open discussion on the future of the Leopold Figl Observatory. To help participants prepare, we highlight below the key science and technical questions we aim to address.

Science discussion

  • Briefly describe operational / funding situation
  • Define the primary science goals for the Figl 1.5 m over the next 5–10 years: exoplanets, time-domain astronomy, or other portfolio.

  • Clarify the role of exoplanet follow-up: core focus or one of several coordinated programmes, and what performance (precision, cadence) is needed to stay competitive.

  • Identify time-domain targets (variables, transients, etc.) where a 1.5 m telescope can make unique or leading contributions.

  • Position Figl within the Austrian and European landscape by outlining key collaborations and networks that would maximise scientific return.

Technical & operational discussion

  • Define the core instrument strategy: optimal camera for high-precision photometry, and whether a second instrument (e.g. low‑resolution spectrograph) is needed.
  • Identify the most impactful telescope and infrastructure upgrades (pointing/tracking, focus, thermal/mechanical stability) to improve precision and reliability for long time-series observations.
  • Specify the required level of automation and scheduling (queue vs. classical) and the corresponding software/pipeline features for fast, uniform data products.
  • Establish a sustainable operations model (staffing, remote/automated night operations, training, documentation) that matches the scientific ambitions.
  • Future project funds should include an additional staff position for the Figl: Establish personnel profile to complement existing expertise
  • Involvement of ANTARES in telescope operations
  • Design a data and archive strategy (storage, access policies, possible cloud use) that enables efficient collaboration and long-term reuse of Figl data.
